Mind Matters Series

Mind Matters

Invites young teens to take a scientific journey to learn about the brain’s complex responses to specific drugs, including cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants, marijuana, nicotine, opiates, prescription drugs, and steroids.

Revised: December 2019
Author: National Institute on Drug Abuse

After 20 years, NIDA has transitioned away from our beloved Sara Bellum character in the Mind Over Matter series to a format that is more relatable to today’s youth audience. The series is now called Mind Matters, and will focus on easy-to-understand scientific facts. We want to thank the audience who made Sara Bellum a hit; please be assured that her spirit of inquisitiveness is what laid the foundation for our more modern format.

The Mind Matters series is a valued resource for tens of thousands of teachers. Each booklet is devoted to a specific drug or drug group. The booklets, available in English and Spanish, can be ordered for free (see below). The accompanying Online-Only Teacher’s Guide includes background information, lesson plans, and activities to enhance students’ learning.
