June 16–19, 2017
Join the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) International Program for the 2017 NIDA International Forum, which will be held June 16–19, 2017, at the Hôtel Bonaventure in Montreal, Canada.
The research symposium, poster session, and network-building activities focus on the range and quality of drug abuse research conducted around the world. Participants meet talented colleagues and learn about drug abuse research and policy issues in other countries as well as the NIDA-supported fellowships and other programs that can support international collaborations.

The NIDA International Program seeks abstract submissions for the 2017 NIDA International Forum.
Abstracts that address areas of NIDA-supported science will receive priority consideration, especially those that address seek, test, treat, and retain HIV/AIDS interventions; medication and vaccine development for nicotine addiction and HIV/AIDS; smoking during pregnancy; and integrating and standardizing databases for brain imaging or genetics and associated phenotype information.
Note: Abstracts will not be selected if the research focuses only on alcohol.
Abstracts for the 2017 NIDA International Forum:
- Must be submitted online.
- Must be submitted by the primary/first author.
- Will be peer reviewed based upon the research topic, scientific merit, relevance to NIDA international research priorities, and quality of the abstract presentation.
Accepted abstracts will be presented as posters during the NIDA International Research Poster Session scheduled as the joint NIDA International Forum and the College on Problems of Drug Dependence (CPDD) Workshop.
Note: For researchers also submitting their abstract to the CPDD Annual Scientific Meeting, CPDD requires that a CPDD member sponsor research abstracts submitted by nonmembers. The chair of the CPDD International Committee, Clyde B. McCoy, Ph.D., University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, United States, has agreed to sponsor abstract submissions by international researchers.
The Ex Ordo Abstract Management System is being used for the 2017 NIDA International Forum Abstract Submission and Travel Award Request process.
- Each person submitting an abstract is required to create an account.
- To create your account, please go to https://2017-nida-forum.exordo.com/login. Then simply enter your email address, enter your First Name and Last Name, and click on "Create an Account."
- After you create a password, the system will take you to the home page of your account, labeled as your dashboard in the Ex Ordo system.
- You may complete your account profile by clicking on "Profile" located in the upper right-hand corner of the dashboard.
- Once you are ready to submit your abstract, click on "Submit a Paper."
- When your submission is completed in the system, you (and any co-authors) will receive confirmation of your submission via email.

Travel Award Request
Deadline: January 17, 2017

A limited number of travel awards are available to 2017 NIDA International Forum participants whose abstracts have been accepted for presentation at the NIDA International Research Poster Session. This award provides partial support to cover the registration, transportation, and lodging costs associated with the NIDA International Forum and the CPDD Annual Scientific Meeting.
To be eligible for a travel award, applicants must:
- Submit and have accepted an abstract for poster presentation at the NIDA International Research Poster Session.
- Be the primary/first author of the submitted abstract.
- Be a citizen or permanent resident of a country other than the United States.
- Participate in the full NIDA International Forum (June 16–19, 2017) and the CPDD meeting (June 17–22, 2017).
To be considered for a travel award, each person submitting an abstract will be asked to complete one question:
As the primary foreign abstract author, are you requesting a Travel Award to attend the 2017 NIDA International Forum?
Look for this question included in Step 4 "Additional Information" of the submission process.
When travel award selections are made, priority will be given to a primary/first author who:
- Has never received a NIDA International Forum Travel Award.
- Submits an abstract on a topic relevant to the Forum theme or the NIDA international research priorities.
- Has not received travel support from the NIDA International Program between July 1, 2016, and June 30, 2017.
Important Note: A foreign abstract author may not nominate or transfer a travel award to another foreign colleague.
To accommodate the varying costs of attending the NIDA International Forum, travel awards will be made in the following amounts according to an applicant’s residency:
|Developing, Low-, and Middle-Income (LAMI) Countries||$1,250 USD|
|All Other (non-LAMI) Countries||$1,000 USD|
|Non-U.S. Citizens in North American Countries||$500 USD|

|Drug Flows Research Consortium
Speakers will introduce the consortium, provide examples of drug flows research within and across national borders, and illustrate the working of the smartphone research approach and nature of the common core research design. Discussants will explore the possibility of tapping field staff in existing or new harm reduction networks. The session will end with a demonstration of an online form that potentially interested collaborators can complete to express regional or personal interest and provide contact details.
|Workshop: Preparing Your Research for Publication
Presenters will discuss selecting a journal, preparing manuscripts, making editorial decisions, responding to reviewers, revising and resubmitting, and dealing with issues that arise after acceptance.
|NIDA International Networking Session
The session will focus on ways to promote adoption of evidence-based drug abuse education, interventions, and policies through fellowships, community education programs, and professional development organizations.

|Joint NIDA International Forum and CPDD Workshop
Learn about research conducted outside of the United States and meet NIDA staff and colleagues from around the world at this CPDD Workshop and NIDA International Forum poster session.
The NIDA International Forum Poster Session, scheduled as the joint NIDA International Forum and CPDD Workshop, will be held Monday, June 19, 2017, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Changes have been made to the annual Poster Session of the NIDA International Forum. In preparation for the 2017 Forum, please review the important details listed below.
- Poster boards will be vertical in direction.
- Boards will be 8 feet high by 4 feet wide (2.4 meters high by 1.2 meters wide).
- One presenter per vertical board.
- When preparing the size of your poster, we recommend:
- Maximum height (up and down) 5.4 feet/ 65 inches or 165 centimeters/1.65 meters
- Maximum width (side to side) 3.8 feet /46 inches or 116.8 centimeters/1.16 meters.
- Each poster author is responsible for all of his or her own poster arrangements (creating, shipping, putting up, and removing). Poster display boards, pushpins, Velcro, and tape will be provided.
- The presenting author must be adjacent to his or her poster during an assigned portion of the session. Authors of even-numbered posters must be by their poster from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Authors of odd-numbered posters must be by their poster from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. All presenters will have ample time to view other posters presented during the same session.
- Poster number assignments will be announced by June 3, 2016.
Enter the CPDD Contest for NIDA International Forum Research Poster Presenters
CPDD gives an award for scientists from low- and middle-income countries who present their research at the joint NIDA International Forum/CPDD International Research Poster Session.
A panel of judges organized by the CPDD International Committee will select the winning poster. The author of the winning poster will receive 3 nights' accommodation at the conference hotel for the 2018 or 2019 CPDD and NIDA International Forum meetings.
Poster presenters will be considered for the award if:
- They are citizens of a low- or middle-income country as defined by the World Bank (this information was submitted with the abstracts).
- The research was conducted in their home country or another low- or middle-income country.
- They are present during the June 19, 2017, NIDA International Forum/CPDD International Research Poster Session.
- A PDF copy of their poster is submitted via email by June 9, 2017, for preliminary judging.

Visa Letter Requests are no longer being accepted.
- Requests will be accepted only between February 27, 2017, and May 5, 2017.
- Neither the NIDA International Program nor the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse and Addiction will communicate with an embassy or consulate on behalf of any individual.
- A visa letter will not be issued to any individual who has requested a visa letter for 2 consecutive years but never attended the Forum.
Visitors to Canada may be required to obtain a visitor’s visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). You should apply for these documents BEFORE you book travel.

Visiting the United States
Forum participants planning to visit the United States before or after the meeting may be required to obtain authorization through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) or the United States visa program. You should apply for these documents BEFORE you book travel.
