[Music]

Team Players:

Go, Blue!

[cheering and applause]

Dr. Joni Rutter speaking:

Soccer, volleyball, baseball, you name it, whatever your game, you may know someone who's gotten hurt.

Umpire:

Strike!

[cheering and applause]

Dr. Cindy Miner speaking:

You probably know someone who's broken a bone, lost a tooth or dislocated a shoulder...

Dr. Joni Rutter speaking:

Hey, watch it!

Dr. Cindy Miner speaking:

Something really painful that requires medical attention.

Dr. Joni Rutter speaking:

And with an injury, your doctor or dentist may have prescribed a medication to help relieve the pain.

Dr. Cindy Miner speaking:

You know, prescription painkillers like Vicodin, Oxycontin, Codeine and Morphine, if taken as directed by a doctor, can help manage pain effectively.

Dr. Joni Rutter speaking:

And just because they can be prescribed by a doctor doesn't mean that they can be used in any circumstance.

[cheering and applause]

Female Speaker:

Go, go, go, go, go!

[cheering and applause]

Dr. Cindy Miner speaking:

Last year, one in 10 high school seniors abused Vicodin.

Dr. Joni Rutter speaking:

That means they used someone else's prescription...

Umpire:

Strike!

Dr. Joni Rutter speaking:

Or didn't follow doctors' orders. Like maybe they shared it with a friend...

Umpire:

Strike!

Dr. Joni Rutter speaking:

Or took it at a party.

Umpire:

She's outta there!

Dr. Cindy Miner speaking:

And one in 20 high school seniors abused Oxycontin last year.

Umpire:

Aw, come on.

Dr. Cindy Miner speaking:

I guess you're wondering, "What's the big deal?" The big deal is that if taken to get high or mixed with alcohol, medications or other drugs, prescription painkillers can be very dangerous...and sometimes deadly.

Dr. Joni Rutter speaking:

Sometimes even a large single dose can slow your breathing so much, and you can die.

Dr. Cindy Miner speaking:

And painkillers can also be highly addictive...

[music playing]

Dr. Cindy Miner speaking:

Making it difficult to stop... Even if you want to.

Dr. Joni Rutter speaking:

If you get hurt and are prescribed a painkiller like Vicodin or Oxycontin, follow your doctor's orders and keep them under your control.

[cheering and applause]

Dr. Cindy Miner speaking:

It'll get you back in the game.

[music playing]
