Dr. Chris Jones speaking: One step that individuals can take if they have a loved one who is using opioids or has the opioid use disorder, or abusing substances is having naloxone on hand and learning how to recognize and respond to an overdose.

Certainly, we want to get people into treatment, but we need them to be alive in order to get them into treatment.

Then the other part for family members or concerned friends is just understanding that opioid use disorder - opioid addiction is a disease that there are effective treatments in particular medication-assisted treatments like methadone buprenorphine or naltrexone that can be provided to individuals that help them recover and live a productive life.
