The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seeking an exceptional and motivated leader to serve as a Supervisory Health Scientist Administrator (Branch Chief) for the Chemistry and Pharmacology Branch (CP) within the Division of Neuroscience and Behavior (DNB), NIDA. DNB supports basic and clinical biomedical and behavioral research to address the public health problem of drug abuse and addiction by developing and supporting an extramural research program that provides an understanding of the neurobiological and behavioral mechanisms of drugs of abuse and their consequences. The Chemistry and Pharmacology Branch (CP) supports research on all aspects of chemistry and pharmacology related to drugs of abuse including, the structural dynamics of receptors, computationally-based drug design, intracellular signaling mechanisms, early drug discovery of treatments for addiction and innovative mechanisms of drug delivery.
The position offers an opportunity to view research at a very broad level and based on this knowledge, have the means to shape the future of research in this particular area by creating initiatives that draw investigators into the area, facilitating collaborations and disseminating the results. This individual becomes the NIDA (and therefore the US government) representative for chemistry and pharmacology of drugs of abuse. The individual will develop and maintain a grant portfolio in chemistry and pharmacology that supports the vision of NIDA to attract the best and brightest researchers to the field of chemistry and pharmacology of drugs of abuse. The individual will supervise and mentor program staff as well as disseminate advances in the area through presentations, workshops, and manuscripts.
NIDA’s ideal candidate should demonstrate knowledge and expertise in chemistry (specifically medicinal chemistry), pharmacology, receptors and neuroscience. Although not required, knowledge of pharmacology of drugs of abuse would be an asset.
Salary will be commensurate with experience. This position is for a GS 601 15 Supervisory HSA Branch Chief position. The salary range is $137,849 to $166,500. A full Civil Service package of benefits (including retirement, health, life, and long-term care insurance, as well as a Thrift Savings Plan, etc.) is available.
