Robert P Schwartz

Dr. Schwartz is a psychiatrist who has worked in drug addiction treatment and research for more than 20 years at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Friends Research Institute. His NIDA-funded research has focused on opiate dependence and its treatment.

This research project has included mixed-methods research to examine why out-of-treatment opiate-dependent individuals do not seek treatment and why newly admitted methadone patients remain or do not remain in treatment over the course of 12 months. Dr. Schwartz has also conducted clinical trials to compare outcomes for methadone treatment alone versus waiting list, methadone with versus without counselling, methadone in prison, buprenorphine in prison, and screening and brief intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT) in community health centers.
