This lecture will address the opioid crisis and its impact on our children. Dr. Davis will speak about the impact of prenatal drug exposure on neonates–both short term and longer-term impact. Dr. Levy will discuss the developmental neurobiology that makes adolescents particularly vulnerable both to initiating substance use and to developing substance use problems and disorders. The speakers will briefly review the correlation between early substance use initiation and substance use disorders, including opioid use disorders. Finally, they will briefly describe a model for integrating substance use early intervention and treatment into pediatric primary care.
