Highlights from 2015 Monitoring the Future Survey

Monitoring the Future

On December 16, 2015, NIDA hosted a press teleconference and Twitter chat to discuss the findings of the 41st annual Monitoring the Future (MTF) survey of drug use and attitudes among 8th, 10th, and 12th graders. Media outreach surrounding the MTF survey reached millions of people nationwide.

MTF generated more than 385 print and online articles in wire services, newspapers, news magazines, television and prominent online news sites. The articles were estimated to reach more than 537 million readers.

NIDA conducted advance outreach to more than 35 media outlets: Many national media outlets covered Monitoring the Future, including placements in: The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Reuters, and U.S. News and World Report.

Television and radio coverage included over 156 stories, reaching 16 of the top 25 television markets and almost 8 million viewers/listeners.

Dr. Nora Volkow was quoted in top-tier broadcast and print media, including TIME, Rolling Stone Magazine, CBS News, Florida News Network and CNN.

Dr. Wilson Compton participated in television, radio, print, and online interviews for: HealthDay, CBS News and Fox News.

Dr. Ruben Baler was interviewed by Spanish-speaking television and radio networks and stations, including: Telemundo, Entravision and WSUA-AM.

Social Media

NIDA reached over 717,338 people with MTF messages via social media channels, including Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

NIDA held its second annual MTF Twitter chat during the afternoon of the data release, featuring Dr. Jack Stein as the spokesperson. Over 207 Twitter accounts participated in a discussion of the MTF data. Read a summary of the chat.

NIDA developed a variety of materials to support the MTF findings – including the Overview of Findings, MTF graphs, charts and infographic, a press release, NIH/NIDA rotators, blog posts for both Nora's blog and the teen blog, and a video featuring Dr. Volkow discussing the findings.
