Marijuana and Cannabinoids: A Neuroscience Research Summit was convened by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to focus on the neurological and psychiatric effects of marijuana, other cannabinoids, and the endocannabinoid system. Both the adverse and the potential therapeutic effects of the cannabinoid system were discussed. The goal of this summit was to make evidence-based information available to inform practice and policy, particularly important at this time given the rapidly shifting landscape regarding the recreational and medicinal use of marijuana. The March 22–23, 2016, meeting was sponsored by several NIH Institutes, including NIDA, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.
