NIDA Cosponsors International Symposium on Drugged Driving at EMCDDA

NIDA International Program Director Steven W. Gust, Ph.D., co-chaired the Third International Symposium on Drug-Impaired Driving, which was held in Lisbon, Portugal, on October 23, 2017. The prevalence of drug-impaired driving has begun to rival that of alcohol-impaired driving in some parts of the world, resulting in a greater focus on the ability to detect drug-impaired drivers using roadside screening tools and efforts to establish “per se” limits for drug use.

EMCDDA Honors NIDA-Supported Research at Lisbon Addictions Conference

An article written by NIDA grantees and a former NIDA International Fellow received the 2017 European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) Scientific Award. The award honors peer-reviewed publications that enhance understanding of the European drug problem through innovative, high-quality research. The authors presented the paper during the Second European Conference on Addictive Behaviours and Dependencies, which was held October 24–26, 2017, in Lisbon, Portugal.

NIDA, EMCDDA Cosponsor Session at Lisbon Addiction Meeting

NIDA grantee Robert L. Balster, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), and NIDA International Program Director Steven W. Gust participated in the First European Conference on Addictive Behaviors and Dependencies, held September 23–25, 2015, in Lisbon, Portugal. NIDA and the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) cosponsored a session focused on ways to promote synergies and sustainability in addiction research capacity building and program implementation. Dr. Gust discussed NIDA’s research capacity-building efforts, and Dr. Balster discussed the NIDA Hubert H.

NIDA Supports Dutch and EMCDDA Summer Programs in Addiction

The NIDA International Program has supported scholarships for students attending two European professional development programs in addiction. Corey Fitzgerald, M.S.W., M.P.H., clinical director of a U.S. Army substance abuse program outpatient clinic, was awarded the 2013 NIDA International Program scholarship to the Dutch Summer Institute on Alcohol, Drugs, and Addiction. The school, which will be held July 7–19, 2013, at the University of Amsterdam, focuses on international networking and multidisciplinary approaches to drug policy, prevention, and evidence-based treatment.
