Experts Share Knowledge on Dual Disorders at International Congress

A recent meeting in Spain brought together professionals in addiction, addiction psychiatry, and mental health to share knowledge and recent research advances about dual disorders.

NIDA International Program Supports AIDS Treatment as Prevention Workshop Participants

The NIDA International Program supported the participation of scientists from Argentina, Peru, and South Africa at the 2nd International HIV Treatment as Prevention Workshop, which was held April 22–25, 2012, in Vancouver, Canada. The meeting was organized by Julio S.G. Montaner, M.D., University of British Columbia, and featured a keynote address by U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator Ambassador Eric Goosby about the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) perspective on treatment as prevention.

Prevention Meeting Highlights International Research

The NIDA International Program and Division of Epidemiology, Services and Prevention Research (DESPR) cosponsored a poster session for international research at the Society for Prevention Research (SPR). The poster session opened the SPR Annual Meeting, which was held May 28–31, 2013, in San Francisco, California. Outgoing SPR President Deborah Gorman-Smith, Ph.D., University of Chicago; DESPR Prevention Research Branch Chief Harold I. Perl, Ph.D.; and NIDA International Program Associate Director Dale S. Weiss welcomed attendees to the poster session.

International and U.S. Drug Abuse Researchers Meet, Exchange Ideas

Drug abuse researchers from Brazil, Mexico, and Taiwan presented their research and sought feedback on upcoming clinical trials during the International Collaboration Workshop held at the recent NIDA Clinical Trials Network (CTN) Steering Committee Meeting.

The meeting is a featured breakout session of the 3-day NIDA CTN Steering Committee Meeting. International presenters included Ronaldo Laranjeira, M.D., Federal University of Sao Paulo; Ming-Chyi Huang, M.D., Ph.D., Taipei City Psychiatric Center; and Chun-Hsin Chen, M.D., M.S., Taipei Medical University–Wang Fang Hospital.

NIDA International Forum Focuses on New and Emerging Psychoactive Substances

More than 260 participants from 61 countries attended the 17th Annual NIDA International Forum, which was held June 8–11, 2012, in Palm Springs, California. The meeting focused on the growing public health problem of new and emerging psychoactive substances, which are mostly unregulated compounds that are specifically designed to circumvent drug laws and mimic the effects of illicit drugs by slightly altering the chemical structure of a known drug. A joint College on Problems of Drug Dependence (CPDD)/NIDA International Forum poster session featured presentations by 160 U.S.
