NIDA, EMCDDA Cosponsor Session at Lisbon Addiction Meeting

NIDA grantee Robert L. Balster, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), and NIDA International Program Director Steven W. Gust participated in the First European Conference on Addictive Behaviors and Dependencies, held September 23–25, 2015, in Lisbon, Portugal. NIDA and the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) cosponsored a session focused on ways to promote synergies and sustainability in addiction research capacity building and program implementation. Dr. Gust discussed NIDA’s research capacity-building efforts, and Dr. Balster discussed the NIDA Hubert H.

NIDA Participates in Meetings Focused on International Standards and Curricula

NIDA International Program Director Steven W. Gust and several NIDA grantees and former fellows participated in a series of international meetings held December 7–11, 2015, in Vienna, Austria. The expert meetings focused on developing and disseminating training curricula and building international standards for the prevention of drug use and treatment of drug use disorders. International Sites, New Partner Expand Drug Facts Week

Drug abuse professionals in 13 nations, many of them former NIDA Hubert H. Humphrey Drug Abuse Research Fellows, held events in conjunction with the 2016 National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week (NDAFW). NIDA began the program in 2010 to counteract misinformation disseminated by the Internet, television, movies, music, or friends. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism joined the effort in 2016, and the event was renamed NDAFW.

SPR Meeting Features NIDA International Poster Session

NIDA International Program Associate Director Dale Weiss and Society for Prevention Research (SPR) President Felipe Gonzalez Castro, Ph.D., University of Texas at El Paso, welcomed participants to the 8th Annual NIDA International SPR Poster Session. The poster session was held May 26, 2015, in conjunction with the SPR Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. The sixteen posters highlighted drug and alcohol abuse prevention research featuring U.S. collaborations with prevention researchers in 12 nations.

NIDA International Forum Turns 20; Focuses on Opportunities for International Collaboration and Multidisciplinary Initiatives

Egyptian Version of NIDA National Drug Facts Week a Success

Egyptian drug abuse professionals participated in the January 2015 NIDA Drug Facts Week activities, holding events at schools, sporting clubs, youth centers, churches, the national police academy, and a book fair. Mohammed Elhamshary, M.D., M.Sc., 2014–2015 NIDA Hubert H. Humphrey Drug Abuse Research Fellow, coordinated an enthusiastic team of psychiatrists and social workers from Egypt Alabassiya Hospital to organize the events in collaboration with the country’s Mental Health Secretariat.
