Dr. Beyrer, Director of the Johns Hopkins Fogarty AIDS International Training and Research Program and of the Johns Hopkins Center for Public Health and Human Rights, has extensive experience in conducting international collaborative research and training programs.
His work includes the epidemiology of HIV among drug users, men who have sex with men (MSM) and sex workers, HIV prevention research, the interactions of public health and human rights, and HIV prevention policy. Dr. Beyrer studied the relationship between narcotics and substance use and HIV/AIDS. Another special research focus is HIV/AIDS preventive interventions, including HIV vaccine clinical trials and preparedness studies. Dr. Beyrer’s research focuses largely on low-and middle-income countries. He is involved in research and/or training activities in Thailand, China, Burma, India, Malawi, Uganda, Ethiopia, South Africa, Brazil, Russia and Kazakhstan.
