Talking to Patients About Health Risk Behaviors (non-credit)

This activity is available for medical students and other health professionals through the NIDA site. Practice your clinical skills with this test and teach module.

This activity is intended for primary care physicians, family physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, emergency department staff, psychiatrists, and social workers.

The goal of this activity is to introduce concepts of motivational interviewing that can be used in patient interactions.


Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the major elements of motivational interviewing
  2. Identify opportunities to use principles of motivational interviewing in patient encounters
  3. Plan appropriate responses based on patients’ descriptions of challenges and opportunities for change
