Treating patients with opioids for chronic pain has its built-in challenges including the risk of development of opioid use disorder and overdose. The importance of a dynamic, patient centered approach to the management of these challenges cannot be stressed enough given the doubling of opioid related overdose deaths in the US over the past decade.
