Tanzania and U.S. Launch Medication-Assisted Therapy Program for Drug Users

The governments of Tanzania and the United States have announced that the first medication- assisted therapy (MAT) program for drug users in sub-Saharan Africa will begin shortly at two sites in Dar es Salaam and one in Zanzibar. Recognizing that high-risk practices related to drug use contribute to HIV transmission, the Tanzania Drug Control Commission (DCC) has promoted and adopted novel and evidence-based interventions to facilitate improved access to services that prevent HIV among drug users.

Call for Applications: Bioethics Training Partnership for African Institutions

The Johns Hopkins-Fogarty African Bioethics Training Program (FABTP) seeks applications from eligible African institutions for a funded collaborative partnership in international research ethics. The goal of the training partnership is to enhance research ethics capacity within the selected African institution. Applicant institutions must meet institutional eligibility requirements. The training partnership will occur over a 12-month period beginning October 2011, with opportunities for continued collaboration thereafter.

Funding Opportunity To Conduct Population-Based Genome Studies in Africa

The November 2, 2011, Letter of Intent deadline is fast approaching for a funding opportunity that enables African researchers to carry out large-scale studies on African populations.
