New NIDA International Program Fellowship Application Deadlines

The NIDA International Program is announcing new application deadlines for its three postdoctoral training fellowships. The deadlines are being adjusted to streamline the application receipt and review processes.

Application deadlines for the following fellowships are now April 1:

Drug Abuse Prevention Research Fellowship Trains "Next Generation" of Mexican Prevention Research Scientists

As the first U.S.–Mexico Drug Abuse Prevention Research Fellow, Argentina Servin, M.D., says she feels very responsible for learning everything possible during the fellowship and applying her knowledge in her home country. She works with commercial sex workers (CSWs), injection drug users (IDUs), and their children to break the cycle of drug use and sex-for-drugs that contributes to the HIV epidemic in northern Mexico. “Even my colleagues working in Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez are astonished at the number of young people affected by CSW/IDU parents and environments,” Dr. Servin said.

Apply by April 1 for NIDA International Fellowships

NIDA International Program postdoctoral fellows conduct a mentored research project with a NIDA-funded investigator, make valuable professional contacts, and learn about the U.S. National Institutes of Health grant application process. Applications are due April 1, 2013, for three fellowships:

NIDA Welcomes Fellows at Orientation

NIDA International Program fellows from around the world visited NIDA headquarters during an orientation January 31 and February 1, 2013. NIDA International Program Director Steven W. Gust, Ph.D., and Associate Director Dale Weiss welcomed the 16 fellows. Participants included the Hubert H. Humphrey Drug Abuse Research Fellows from Virginia Commonwealth and Johns Hopkins universities. They were joined by scientists working with U.S.

U.S.–Mexico Drug Abuse Prevention Research Fellowship

The NIDA US-Mexico Drug Abuse Prevention Research Fellowship provides a unique opportunity for Mexican researchers to obtain postdoctoral training with a NIDA-supported U.S. mentor. Prevention Research Fellows benefit from an intensive research training experience designed to enhance the fellows’ ability to conduct independent research upon return to Mexico. Mexican Scientist Awarded New Prevention Fellowship

Argentina Elisa N. Servin Aguirre, M.D., has been named the first U.S.–Mexico Drug Abuse Prevention Research Fellow. The new fellowship is a collaborative effort of NIDA and the National Institute of Psychiatry Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz, along with participation from the National Commission Against Addictions (CONADIC) and the Society for Prevention Research.
