De acuerdo con la Encuesta Nacional sobre el Uso de Drogas y la Salud1 de la Administración de Servicios de Abuso de Sustancias y Salud Mental (SAMHSA, por sus siglas en inglés), en el 2009, 23.5 millones de personas de 12 años y mayores necesitaron tratamiento para problemas de abuso de drogas ilícitas o alcohol (es decir, el 9.3 por ciento de todas las personas de 12 años de edad y mayores). De éstas, solamente 2.6 millones, es decir, el 11.2 por ciento de las personas que necesitaban tratamiento, lo recibieron en un centro de tratamiento especializado.
