Telephone Enhancement of Long-Term Engagement
Now that I Have Joined…

Introduction

Welcome to the study! By joining this study you are helping doctors and providers to figure out the best way to help patients stay involved with treatment activities after leaving a residential program.

Reminders

You will be asked to do the following things as part of being in the study:

  • Answer questions about your substance use, HIV risk behavior and information about other areas of your life (1-2 hours)

  • Provide information for a locator form to help us reach you after leaving this program

  • Continue to participate in the residential treatment program as you normally would

  • Meet with the study counselor to review your continuing care plan and be randomly assigned to the telephone call group or the usual care group

  • Attend a follow-up visit 13 weeks after discharge

You will be asked to do the following things during your follow-up visit (1-2 hours):

    • Answer questions about your substance use, life, and feelings
    • Provide a urine sample for drug testing
    • Provide a breath sample for alcohol testing

If you are assigned to the group that gets telephone calls, you need to remember:

    • To be near the phone at scheduled times
    • The calls will be recorded to make sure the counselors are doing their job correctly. Only the researchers will listen to the calls. After they listen to the calls, the recordings will be destroyed.

Questions

If at any time you have questions regarding the study, you can contact the researchers listed on the informed consent form.
